By definition charcoal is the lightweight black carbon and ash residue hydrocarbon produced by removing water and other volatile constituents from animal and vegetation substances. Charcoal is usually produced by slow pyrolysis — the heating of wood or other substances in the absence of oxygen. (Wikipedia)
Over the last year or so charcoal has been getting a lot of attention in the health and beauty field. While charcoal pills have been out for a while and used as a dietary supplement, recently people have been using activated charcoal to whiten teeth and clear pores.
Activated charcoal is made from coconut shells and other natural sources so I decided that I wanted to give it a try. By mixing two teaspoons of baking soda and the powder from three charcoal pills I combined the mixture to use as a toothpaste and face mask.
According to draxe.com,activated charcoal helps whiten teeth while promoting good oral health by changing the pH balance in the mouth, helping prevent cavities, bad breath and gum disease. It works to whiten teeth by adsorbing plaque and microscopic tidbits that stain teeth. This activated charcoal use is cost-effective and an all-natural solution for a bright smile.
I can say while the mixture was on my teeth it seemed to be whitening but once I rinsed it I only saw a slight difference. The biggest difference was the feeling of my teeth. It felt a lot smoother and cleaner than just regular toothpaste.
For external treatments, it’s effective at treating body odor and acne and relieving discomfort from insect bites, rashes from poison ivy or poison oak, and snake bites. With the remaining mixture I smoothed the dry mixture over my damp face and left the mixture on for about 15-20 minutes.
While most people tend to make a face peel I chose not to do the glue method. After rinses my face with warm water my face felt tighter and smoother.
(Excuse my eyebrows)
After rinsing I moisturize with jojoba oil and I could tell that a few smaller blemishes on my face seemed to lighten or disappear all together. I have been doing the face wash for two days now and I look forward to seeing my progress after the week ends .
